2016

This has been such a wonderful year. Thanks to all my lovely customers - I cannot believe how awesome everyone that I meet is. It is such a privilege to make jewellery for a living and I am also so thrilled to share my work space with Fiona, Corin, Chantal and Paris. We are very proud to have started Real Job Studios and look forward to welcoming you to some upcoming events next year (including a solo show for me - woohoo!).

I have closed the online store for the year, but will have it back up and running when I am in the studio mid January 2017.

If you would like to discuss a commission then feel free to book an appointment now for the new year.

I also have a couple of days in the studio left, so if you are interested in seeing what I have left in stock then please make a showroom appointment or get in touch

I wish you all much love and luck for the holiday period.

xx KV

Real Job Studios Opening Night

We officially opened and we were so thrilled with how many awesome friends showed up to come and check out the space! We are now officially open for business on Saturdays from 10-4pm. I will be working next on the 11th of June if you feel like coming to say hi.

Here are the photos from our opening!

Thanks Heather Lighton for the beautiful shots.

Real Job Studios Opens on Friday 6 May 6-8pm

I mentioned in my last post that something exciting was on the cards. For the past few months myself and pals Fiona Simmons and Corin Adams have been pulling out ceilings, painting and patching and learning the finer arts of hammer drilling to build ourself a new work space and store. We went to uni together almost a decade ago and it is so exciting for us to be united in this new project.

Real Job Studios is named for our collective ambition that our art practices be our full time jobs. It is a workspace and store for artists and makers. Currently residing with us are Lilli Waters and my sister and graphic designer (who has done all of our branding) Lea Verity.

Stupidly I did not take many photos during the construction, but here is some of the action. Special thanks to Inglis Concreting who transformed our floors and Everclear Electrical who crawled into an ungodly ceiling space to make our lighting pretty. And to some of the biggest legends in the universe Like Butter with whom I used to share a studio and who have built us our beautiful custom desks and furniture.

Christmas Time

What an exciting year this has been. For me personally, it has been one of many changes - some good, some sad. I am very much looking forward to 2016 AND with 2016 will bring an awesome announcement... but that will need to wait for a little bit.

Thanks to my delightful stockists and to those lovely people who have trusted me to make pieces that mark special moments in their lives. It is this that makes the day to day running of a small business worthwhile.

I have been getting many emails this week asking for last minute christmas gifts and whilst I can no longer make custom pieces I have just finished a few beauties that are ready to ship. If you get your order in by Friday and live in Australia then it should be there in time to slide under the tree as though you are the most organised person in the world.

Click through to the shop and of course, email me if you have questions. I am happy to exchange sizes of unworn pieces after my Christmas break if you are nervous about ordering the wrong thing.

Much love, Kim

Here are some of the pieces ready to go. I will be taking orders for any size after January 18th.

This is me at Meredith last weekend. Looking forward to closing my eyes for a snooze over Christmas! *falls asleep at keyboard*

Orogeny Opening Night At Pieces of Eight

Thanks to everyone who came out last to see my latest exhibition Orogeny.

Special thanks to Mel and the team at Pieces Eight and to Heather Lighton for for the photographs.

Orogeny was presented as part of Radiant Pavilion.

Orogeny - Upcoming Exhibition at Pieces of Eight

OPENING NIGHT 1ST SEPTEMBER 2015, 6-8PM, PIECES OF EIGHT GALLERY, 28 RUSSEL PLACE, MELBOURNE

I am thrilled to be working on a new show at Pieces of Eight. It is part of the Radiant Pavilion jewellery program and is the culmination of the past year of my work. It will be drawing on my time in Coober Pedy, the French Alps, Mexico, Peru and Chile. If you have the evening free it would be wonderful to see you there. In the meantime, here are some pieces and photographs that form the basis of the show.

"The past year has taken Kim to the plains of Coober Pedy and the mountains of Patagonia. Employing her signature carved forms, intricate engravings and opulent gemstone colour palette, 'Orogeny' merges the geological wonders observed on this journey with her internal emotional landscapes."

Romance Was Born 'Bush Magic' @NGV

So excited to have had an opportunity to make some jewellery that was worn in the Romance Was Born closing night runway show, thanks to Pieces of Eight Gallery.

As I would expect from one of my favourite labels, the show was spectacular and the pieces made me want to jump for joy. Anna and Luke are fair-dinkum clever.

Thanks to stylist Mark Vassalo, NGV Melbourne, and VAMFF.

My current landscape

Has been one of work and reflection after my time away. Here are some pieces that I have been making.

Leila's Ring. A christmas commission for Leila from her mother, using the client's own opal and set in sterling silver. This pieces is designed to stack in with a ring she already had, shown below.

Nellie's Ring

A ring that was commissioned by Nellie's wonderful partner. The brief was to make a ring that really made the opal shine (a beautiful stone that I picked up in Coober Pedy) against a background of white and bright silver. This was a bit of a challenging setting job for me as I have not ever worked with a triangular stone.

Sally's Rings

A while ago a client asked me to incorporate the stones from many rings and earrings she had been given by her grandmother. I'm not going to lie - I was daunted by this project! There were so many stones! But, they were just such an amazing colour palette.

I posted the sketches earlier, but here is the image of the one we eventually went for, with some additions and alterations.

Gold, garnet, opal and sapphire ring. EASILY one of the most fun rings I have ever made.

Bits and Pieces

I feel like I  have really been neglecting the blog in the last little while! So much has been happening and life is wonderfully busy. In any case, here are some of the pieces I have been posting on instagram. Hopefully there will be a chance to post some more in depth explanations sooooooon!

Gentlemen's Rings

A selection of rings for the boys. Mixture of textures and colours and sometimes secret stones.

It has been very interesting making these rings. Often gentlemen feel like they want something really plain and traditional, but once we start the design they become very engaged and excited. It's such a pleasure to be involved in this process.

Sketchbook

Last night I had a brainwave on a project that I have been struggling with. I'm not sure why I have had trouble with it - the stones are vintage from a customer and I think I have been a bit overwhelmed by their beauty and quantity! Luckily, the customer has been incredibly patient with me...and I am so thankful as I love these designs. Initial sketches are below.

Online Shop is OPEN

Thanks so much for your patience. The online store is now integrated with my website and will be kept up to date with goodies! At this stage I am only able to accept Australian payments through the system but if you are an international client I can still ship to you - just send me an email and we can process it through paypal.

Please email if the store is missing something that your heart desires - I would be happy to help.

Victoria's Engagement Ring

Towards the end of last year, the creative and beautiful Victoria commissioned me to make her engagement ring. The first design was a bit too conservative for her, not quite bold enough, and she made some lovely collage drawings to communicate what she was after. I loved her ideas and the final piece is one of my favourite engagement rings to date.
